We lose track of the humanity of each other. If I’m just seeing other people as objects, there’s a whole bunch of things I would do to an object that I wouldn’t do to a person… If we can find a way to recover this sense of the humanity around us, we might do a lot of things different. And we’re not going to justify our actions by imagining to ourselves that others are not real people.
